Grandfather Fatally Shot in Kentucky Gun Store When Customer Has a Negligent Discharge

CARROLLTON, KY — A tragic incident at a Kentucky gun store led to the death of a beloved grandfather, Chad Wainscott, 50, after a customer negligently discharged a firearm. The Incident occurred on Saturday around 8:30 pm at Humphrey Double H Farms Enterprises Inc. in Carroll County.

According to Kentucky State Police, the customer was examining a firearm for sale and was manipulating it when a single round was discharged. Wainscott, who was inside the store at the time, was struck by the bullet. Despite efforts by other patrons and paramedics to save his life, Wainscott was pronounced dead at Carroll County Hospital.

An employee from Humphrey Double H Farms Enterprises Inc. expressed their condolences, stating, “Prayers to the family and all that, and that’s the only comment we have.”

The individual who fired the gun has been cooperative with investigators. Based on their statements and witness accounts, police do not suspect foul play. The focus of the investigation is likely to be on how the firearm came to be loaded and whether any rules or protocols were violated.

This incident underscores the importance of gun safety, particularly in environments where firearms are handled frequently. Violations of basic safety rules, such as ensuring that the muzzle does not cross anything one is not prepared to shoot, can lead to tragic consequences. In some states, such an incident could be classified as manslaughter or negligent homicide, depending on the circumstances surrounding how the firearm was handled.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Chad Wainscott, remembering him as a cherished grandfather whose life was cut short by a preventable accident.
